How and Why Build a Fort???

I made a FORT!!

Unlike other recording booths I’ve seen, I wanted mine to be for recording AND other fun stuff like meditating, or a ‘time-out’ space to dream, read, nap, or just hide.

I’ve wanted to make one of these little bad aces for awhile, and the Covid lockdown made it even more fundamental to my creative work. I live in a one-room open concept basement apartment with my hubby, so my little fort came in super handy when I returned to mental/emotional therapy with my counselor and had to meet on zoom.

Sometimes I just need space to decompress and untangle my senses so I can find myself in the noise of emotional chatter. The last year, in particular, was an emotional roller coaster. Giving myself the gift of space was the self-care I desperately needed to both block out the world, and also feel to the depths of my toes every ounce of joy and pain all at the same time. This little fort holds it all for me. It’s my container of goodness!

Do you have a space you go to or have created that holds you? What does it look/feel/sound like?

Would you like to make your own fort?

Here is the excellent PVC pipe fort plans I found online from Formufit.com:

I don’t do affiliate links… yet (thinking about it cause I could get a few pennies for good luck) but here are the blankets I got from Amazon for the insulation:

Padded Moving Blankets

Basic Moving Blankets

I started off with the basic blankets, but they weren’t enough soundproofing. Plus, I didn’t like the felting of the blanket dust getting everywhere. Added the Padded Moving Blankets and found the two blankets are a good combo. This is not a completely soundproof solution. But it cuts out most of the high-pitched and sharp fluctuating frequencies from doors, cupboards, my forever running heater, etc.

The butter-soft, or ‘MINK’ like fleece I got from JoAnn’s. Normally this fleece is pretty expensive, but JoAnn’s has great coupons and regular discounts you can typically find it for a lot less.

Have suggestions? I’d love to hear your ideas! Drop them in the comments.
